George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) can be credited for modern English drama
and is one of the most successful dramatists of the 20th century. With
intellectual humor, he turns against the traditional social forms and puts
his metaphysics and life force against it. In 1925, he received the Nobel
prize.
One of the most famous works in world literature is the comedy "Pygmalion" written in 1912 and premiering in Vienna in 1913. "Pygmalion" has been produced as a movie several times and celebrated as Loewes musical "My Fair Lady"(premiered in New York in 1956) is one of the greatest successes in the history of theater. Shaw tells in his ironic and social critical way, the story of the clever and vulgar speaking flower girl Eliza Doolittle who changes with the help of the rude Professor Higgins to a "Lady of Society". What started as a bet, which was to be just and experiment of his phonetic tests, developed momentum and put Higgins into the role of Ovid's Greek sculptor Pygmalion who falls helplessly in love with his created sculpture. Even Goethe adopted the subject "Pygmalion" in one of his romances. Looking for a retailer in your area ? - Please check our Database for the USA |
