The Neustadt Festival Bear 1998

The Neustadt Doll and Teddy Bear Festival is the oldest German Toy Festival in existence. It was first celebrated in 1992. Each year, in the month of may, more than 20 thousand people visit the doll town Neustadt, located amid of Germany's oldest and most famous toy region, to celebrate this 3-day festival.

For the first Festival in the year 1992 HERMANN-Coburg had an excellent idea and created the First Neustadt Festival Bear as a surprise for the town Neustadt. With this Teddy Bear HERMANN-Coburg became the pioneer of a very new kind of collectible Teddy Bears - called Festival Bears. Since that time HERMANN-Coburg introduces each year a new Neustadt Festival Bear in a limited Edition of only 100 pieces. The Festival Bear 1998 is the 7th in this series. In the course of  the years the HERMANN-Coburg Festival Bears became one of the most desired Teddy Bears in Germany. Although nobody knows the design of the next year, the upcoming up Festival Bears are already sold out.

HERMANN-Coburg, one of the oldest toy companies of this region, takes part in the festivities of the Festival with several special HERMANN-Coburg events like:

  • factory sale of rarities

  • pre samples or special editions

  • sightseeing of its Teddy Bear manufacture in Coburg

  • movie-show of the HERMANN-Coburg video "Teddy Bears of Old Tradition".

The Sonneberg Museum's Bear 1997

Since 1994 HERMANN-Coburg introduces every year in September on the occasion of the Sonneberg Museum's Festival a special Limited Edition of 100 pieces for the Sonneberg Toy Museum, called Sonneberg Museum's Bear.

Sonneberger Museumsbear 1997The design of this year´s 1997 Sonneberg Museum´s Bear is pictured on the left side of this page.

In a great ceremony, the Number 001 of the Museum's Edition is presented every year in September to the Museum. The picture shows the presentation of the Sonneberg Museum's Bear 1995 to Dr. Hofmann, president of the Sonneberg Toy Museum.

The Sonneberg Toy Museum is the oldest and most traditional German Toy Museum, founded 1901 by the old Sonneberg Toy Manufacturers. HERMANN-Coburg is proud and thankful, that some of the Old Max Hermann Teddy Bears are preserved in the possession of this museum.

Here are some words from the Festival speech of Dr. Ursula Hermann in 1995 (translated in English):

"As I make this traditional presentation to you today, Dr. Hofmann, of the Number 001 of our Sonneberg Museum Bear for this year, I do so in memory of my grandfather, who has also presented his Teddy Bears to this Museum in the past. I do this with some words told to me by an old friend: The manufacturers have to bring their Dolls and Teddy Bears today to the museums, because the museums alone are the places, which preserve them for the future and for all times."

Now, in 1997 HERMANN Coburg published in accordance with the Museum, a special Limited American Edition of 500 pieces of this Sonneberg Museum Bear, available only in the United States. HERMANN-Coburg did this, because they want that the name and tradition of the oldest German Toy Museum shall be enlarged in the whole world.

The Hennef Edition 1996 - HERMANN One of a Kind Bears

The Hennef Bear - a special edition of HERMANN-Coburg - is introduced each year on the occasion of Europe's biggest Teddy Bear Show, "Teddy Bear Total" in the German town Hennef. End of April 1996 "Teddy Bear Total" took place for the second time.

This year HERMANN-Coburg published with its "One of a Kind Bears" a very new kind of a Limited Edition. As a world-wide experiment, HERMANN-Coburg was the first and only Teddy Bear manufacturer in the world to publishing of a Limited Edition of 65 different "One of a Kind Bears".
This means that although each of the 65 Teddy Bears belongs to one and the same Limited Edition, each Bear is different from the other. With this edition HERMANN-Coburg shows for the first time the fascinating point of intersection between a "Limited Edition" and a "One of the Kind Bear" . HERMANN-Coburg is the first Teddy Bear company to move this boundary-line.

This unique experiment was only possible by the help of all HERMANN-Coburg workers. While the artist Ulla Hermann drew the 65 different patterns for the Bears and laid down the base line, which united all 65 Teddy Bears to a uniform edition, the workers were free in their fantasy to realise this conception.

The manufacture of these 65 Teddy Bears was for all participants a great adventure, because nobody knew at the starting point of the manufacture something about the face and the figure of the respective Teddy Bears. Each was produced only one time without any pre samples.

The pictures show a selection of some of these Bears. The uniting base-line of all 65 different Teddy Bears was the design of the same uniform collar and the same uniform embroidery of the paws. Each Bear was numbered, but not with the words "Number 01 of 65", but with marking "modell (that means design) 01 of 65". In addition all Bears were made of the same fabric. The chosen fabric was an old, out of produdtion artificial silk of the Fifties, which is now exceptionally costly.

Incredibly, one half hour after the "Teddy Bear Total Show" opened its doors in Hennef, the entire Limited Edition was sold out. Only the design 01 and 65 remained in the possession of the HERMANN Company. Although Dr. Ursula and Martin Hermann had decided that also the design 02 and 03 shall remain in their personal possession, a fanatical Teddy Bear collector didn't move away from the HERMANN booth for more than one hour until he had persuaded the HERMANN family to separate itself also from their personal pieces. Never before the HERMANN family had seen so many tears in the eyes of collectors when they had to inform them that the Limited Edition is sold out.
