The Epoch Bears

Three small epoch bears from the 1999 HERMANN collection invite bear lovers to take a journey through mankind. "Oetzi" represents the Stone Age era - the oldest epoch of human culture. Over 10,000 years ago, primitive man - Homo sapiens - began to use simple wooden tools to make the earth resourceful. Oetzi, the glacier mummy, was found in 1991 in the Oetztaler Alps of Austria. For over 5000 years he was preserved in ice and now he provides valuable information about the lives of the first man on our planet. With the bear Perikles, the passage through time continues into the ancient age.
The cultural elements of the Greek-Roman antiquity like astrology, philosophy, poetry and rhetoric became the intellectual basis of the western hemisphere. Perikles lived around 500 BC and was the first democratic statesman of Athens. Philosophers such as Sophokles were his close friends. With the construction of the Acropolis, Perikles made himself immortal. Kunigunde, the damsel of the castle, finally brings our journey to the Middle Ages, which was the peak of Knighthood. The culture epoch of the Middle Ages, which started around the 5th-6th century and stretched into the 16th-17th century, was characterized through the spiritual attitude of Christianity and the church. While the Enlightenment spoke more of the grim middle ages, the Romantic describes the Middle Ages as an idealistic time of the religious, knightly community of the Christian western hemisphere.

The Year of Johann Strauss

In the cultural year of 1999, the city of Coburg honors the famous composer Johann Strauss (1825-1899), who became a citizen of Coburg in 1887. The Hermann Teddy Bear Company has joined in contributing to this special event. With their new design of the Johann Strauss bear, the Hermann Company pays homage to the 100th anniversary of the Waltz King’s death. The new Johann Strauss bear is very special because he plays the most beautiful and famous waltz - "The Blue Danube" and enlightens the hearts of bear friends all over the world. The Vienna born composer became immortal through his waltzes
and operetta’s. Out of love and after the failure of his second marriage he became a Coburg citizen. For religious reasons it was not allowed in Vienna to obtain a divorce, so he moved to Coburg where it was permitted. He converted to the Protestant religion on August 15, 1887, and then married his third wife, Adele, who was also from Vienna. The marriage was resisted by many. Strauss and Adele lived only a few weeks in Coburg. After their wedding they returned to Vienna. Nevertheless the society of Vienna was upset about the Coburg marriage. Johann Strauss never again received honors or awards for his work. Up until his death, he remained a Coburg citizen and is never mentioned by any Vienna historians.

Famous Lovers - Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet are one of the most famous romantic couples in world literature. William Shakespeare (1564-1616) who describes the tragic relationship of these two lovers became famous through his tragedies and comedies. Romeo and Juliet written (around 1593) is one of his first tragedies. It is Shakespeare’s first attempt to project a conflict from the past to the present. Juliet symbolizes the new, which sees love as the highest expression of freedom. Through the death of the two lovers, the old order appears to win, but at the grave, the families renounce the revenge tradition and overcome the old conventions. The effect of Shakespeare’s dramas continues beyond his time and country and is only reached or surpassed by the influence of Greek poetry. Especially in Germany, Shakespeare became the leading figure for young poets of the 18th century. The Storm and Stress period of German literature would not be conceivable without the influence of Shakespeare. Many works of Goethe, Schillers and Lessings pervade from Shakespeare’s intellect. Following Professor Higgins and Eliza Doolittle the Hermann-Coburg Company continue the famous lovers series with Romeo and Juliet.

250th birthday of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

The Goethe bear, carrying along a complete edition of Goethe’s main work Faust, commemorates the 250th birthday of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) on August 28, 1999. This memoriable event is even more significant since the Goethe City Weimar was appointed to be the European Cultural Capital for 1999. Like no other German poet, Goethe understood how to bring life and his works into fascinating harmony. The indisputable greatest German poet, Goethe desired to gain knowledge in every subject. His world fame is a result of his literary works, with Faust as his greatest poetry. Goethe lived in a historical eventful time, which was characterized through the
Storm and Stress period. Born as a Patrician son in Frankfurt, Goethe attended school in Leipzig and studied jurisprudence. After his journeys to Switzerland and Italy, he accepted an invitation in 1775 from Duke Carl August to come to Weimer, without foreseeing that his visit would turn into a life-long stay. Soon after his arrival, a highly educated literary circle was created in Weimer, which Schiller joined later. Goethe finished the first part of Faust in Weimer in 1808. The Faust accompanied Goethe through his entire life and is his bequeathing to mankind. Undoubtedly, Faust is remembered as one of the greatest creations of world literature. In connection with the saga from the exorcist Faust, Goethe’s monumental poetry has its own life, which transforms him from a young rebel to acknowledging the objective world in its legitimacy. Through the destiny of a single human being, the symbolic path of all mankind's is described.
