The Three Wise Men
The three wise men, Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar are said to have received their names from an old Christian custom of blessing homes at the beginning of each year on the feast of the three kings. With the words, "Christus mansionem benedicat", (Christ bless our home), a visible sign was placed above the door with the three beginning letters of the Latin blessing (C-M-B) written with consecrated chalk. This custom dates back to the very early pre-middle ages and is still practiced today. The day of the home blessing was dedicated to the three wise men every January 6th. The names of the kings - Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar originated back in the 6th century from the three starting letters of the blessing, C-M-B. In the bible (Matth. 2,1-12), the wise men from the east are not referred to as having any names. They were described as astrologers who followed the star of Jesus. Various cultures give the Magi further identity. In the Western Hemisphere dating back to the 14th century, Melchior and sometimes Caspar are described as Moor.
