August 28, 1999, marks the 250th birthday of the greatest German poet, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, (1749-1832). Like no other he shaped centuries of old German culture. This memorable event is even more significant since the Goethe City of Weimar was appointed to be the European Cultural Capital for 1999. In Weimar, Goethe completed the first part of "Faust" in 1808. "Faust" followed Goethe through his entire life and is his bequeathing to mankind. Goethe's works are without question some of the greatest creations of world literature.
