Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 - 1791)
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was one of the world's greatest composers. Along with Haydn and Beethoven he was one of the leading composers of the classical period and began composing music at the age of five. His works included all realms of music e.g. chamber music, symphonies, operas as well as church music. His best known sacred work is the Requiem which he began in the last year of his life and left unfinished. Mozart is said to have thought a great deal about his own death while working on this piece. Other works he is remembered for is the opera "The Magic Flute” and his orchestral work entitled "Die Kleine Nachtmusik”. Like many other great composers, Mozart died a poor man.

The Phantom of the Opera
The legend of the Phantom of the Opera, written by Gaston Leroux (1868-1927), portrays the mysterious ghost who roams in the catacombs and in the maze of cellar vaults of the Paris Opera House. Under the influence of the Belle Opoque of Paris during the change of the century, Gaston Leroux who once held jobs as a lawyer, court reporter and theater critic, was soon to become the future writer of the famous novelette "le Fantome de l'Opera” which was publicized in 1911. Leroux was convinced that this ghost of the opera really existed in flesh and blood and was not the superstitious fantasy of the opera house employees. The first film debut was in 1925. Since then, the mystery of the Phantom of the Opera has drawn filmmakers to produce it over and over again. Last, but not least, the Phantom of the Opera gained world recognition through Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical, that premiered in London in 1986.

Pygmalion
George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) can be credited for modern English drama and is one of the most successful dramatists of the 20th century. With his intellectual humor, he turns against the traditional social forms and puts his metaphysics and life force against it. In 1925, he received the Nobel prize. One of the most famous works in world literature is the comedy "Pygmalion” written in 1912 and premiering in Vienna in 1913. "Pygmalion” has been produced as a movie several times and celebrated as Loewes musical "My Fair Lady” (premiered in New York in 1956) is one of the greatest successes in the history of theater.
Shaw tells in his ironic and social critical way, the story of the clever and vulgar speaking flower girl Eliza Doolittle who changes with the help of the rude Professor Higgins to a "Lady of Society”. What started as a bet, which was to be just and experiment of his phonetic tests, developed momentum and put Higgins into the role of Ovid's Greek sculptor Pygmalion who falls helplessly in love with his created sculpture. Even Goethe adopted the subject "Pygmalion” in one of his romances.
