Panda Bears

The world of bears is varied. On the one hand the brown bear (Ursus), the Asiatic Black Bear (Selenarctos) and the Ice Bear (Thalarctos) are categorized into the real bears (Ursidae). On the other hand the panda bears are put into a special category. They belong to the species of small bears (Procyonidae), despite the size of the Giant Panda can reach almost five foot. The Red Panda and the Giant Panda are from the same family, despite their different appearances. Where as the Red Panda reminds us of a raccoon, the appearance of the Giant Panda looks more like a bear. Both are plant eaters and they both love bamboo.

The Giant Panda
(Ailuropoda melanoleuca)

While the Panda is generally known as the black and white kind - the classic panda known as the Giant Panda is a more mysterious mammal on this planet. He was only discovered in 1869 and is very hard to find living in his natural habitat. The reason for this is that his living area is very limited in the sealed bamboo forests of southeast Tibet and Szetschuan. Through the reduction of the bamboo his only food source, the Giant Panda has become more and more rare. When he eats he sits on his behind like a teddy bear. Because of his rarity and beloved appearance, the black and white pandas are of great interest and have become a symbol of the world wildlife foundation.

Red Panda
(Ailurus fulgens)

While the Red Panda also known as the Lesser Panda, is not as well known, he is far more spread out all over the world than his bigger cousin. Just like the Giant Panda, the Red Panda's favorite spot is the isolated bamboo forests. Red Pandas are found on steep mountains in western China and in the Tibetan Himalayas. His fox red fir gave him the name Red Panda. His long tail is gold with reddish brown rings. His almost triangle shaped face has a white mask with a dark brown stripe which reaches from the eye up to the corner of the mouth. The Red Panda spends his days sleeping in trees. They are a family animal. Male and female are always staying together and usually produce many children.
